The atmospheric emissions in Spain: A regional analysis

    Get PDF
The gas emissions to the atmosphere are one the main and more actual environmental problems in the world. The effects of greenhouse gas emissions have been studied and treated recently in the Climate Change Conference in Kyoto. In the approved Kyoto Protocol, the European Union would reduce emissions by 8%, the United States by 7%, and Japan by 6%. The data for each country are used to implement policies and to make global decisions regarding the level of emissions allowed in the future. For this reason, a study more in depth about the origin and level of emissions from a regional perspective become necessary, due to the implications on the regional development. In this paper we will provide detailed information regarding atmospheric emissions in Spanish regions. Moreover, we will show that in many cases the atmospheric emissions are not directly related to the economic situation of each region. For this reason, environmental policies should pay attention to the regional differences within a country.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, nonadherence to seasonal influenza vaccination guidelines for children and adolescents is common and results in unnecessary morbidity and mortality. We conducted a quality improvement project to improve vaccination rates and test effects of 2 interventions on vaccination guidelines adherence. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized control trial with 11 primary care practices (PRACTICE) that provided care for 11 293 individual children and adolescents in a children\u27s health care system from September 2015 through April 2016. Practice sites (with their clinicians) were randomly assigned to 4 arms (no intervention [Control], computerized clinical decision support system [CCDSS], web-based training [WBT], or CCDSS and WBT [BOTH]). RESULTS: During the study, 55.8% of children and adolescents received influenza vaccination, which improved modestly during the study period compared with the prior influenza season ( P = .009). Actual adherence to recommendations, including dosing, timeliness, and avoidance of missed opportunities, was 46.4% of patients cared for by the PRACTICE. The WBT was most effective in promoting adherence with vaccination recommendations with an estimated average odds ratio = 1.26, P \u3c .05, to compare between preintervention and intervention periods. Over the influenza season, there was a significantly increasing trend in odds ratio in the WBT arm ( P \u3c .05). Encouraging process improvements and providing longitudinal feedback on monthly rate of vaccination sparked some practice changes but limited impact on outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Web-based training at the start of influenza season with monthly reports of adherence can improve correct dose and timing of influenza vaccination with modest impact on overall vaccination rate

09-05 "The Environmental Impacts of Soybean Expansion and Infrastructure Development in Brazil’s Amazon Basin"

For decades, the development of transportation infrastructure in the Brazilian Amazon has been the government’s main social and economic development policy in the region. Reductions in transportation costs have not only opened the agricultural frontier to cattle ranching and logging but have also caused more than two-thirds of Amazonian deforestation. Currently, soybean cultivation is a new economic force demanding improvements to roads in the region. Profitable soybean crops have spread over the Mato Grosso’s cerrados and now head toward the core of the Amazon rain forest. One of the main constraints for soy expansion into the Amazon has been the poor condition of roads. In this study, we analyze the effect Amazon transportation infrastructure programs have on soybean expansion by lowering transport costs. The analysis is based on spatial estimates of transportation costs for the soybean sector, first using current road networks and then projecting changes based on the paving of the Cuiabá-Santarém road. Our results indicate that paving the Cuiabá-Santarém road would reduce transportation costs by an average of 10pertonforfarmerslocatedinthenorthernpartofMatoGrosso,byallowingproducerstoreroutesoybeanshipmentstotheSantareˊmport.Pavingtheroadalsowouldexpandtheareawheregrowingsoybeansiseconomicallyfeasiblebyabout70percent,from120,000to205,000km2.MostofthisnewareawouldbelocatedinthestateofParaˊandiscoveredlargelybyforests.ACostBenefitanalysisoftheroadprojectindicatesthattheinvestmentsininfrastructurewouldgeneratemorethan10 per ton for farmers located in the northern part of Mato Grosso, by allowing producers to reroute soybean shipments to the Santarém port. Paving the road also would expand the area where growing soybeans is economically feasible by about 70 percent, from 120,000 to 205,000 km2. Most of this new area would be located in the state of Pará and is covered largely by forests. A Cost-Benefit analysis of the road project indicates that the investments in infrastructure would generate more than 180 million for soybean farmers over a period of twenty years. These benefits, however, ignore the project’s environmental impacts. If the destruction of ecological services and products provided by the existing forests is accounted for, then the Cuiabá-Santarém investment would generate a net loss of between 762millionand762 million and 1.9 billion. This result shows the importance of including the value of the natural capital in feasibility studies of infrastructure projects to reflect their real benefits to society as a whole.

This paper reveals tensions existing in the university campus which influence communication among full-time professors. This tensions enable or difficult to obtain agreements in order to coordinate actions. The analytical framework was made of federal educative policies, especially the Program for Development of Professors (PRODEP) profile. The way of working of professors, associated in academic corps (CA) was investigated. 24 exhaustive interviews were carried out among teachers from six schools at the UAQ. Results showed communication difficulties among professor in stablishing common tasks. Communication directed to agreement was not the most common practice.  It is describe how academics, adopt, adapt or resist normative-working conditions for teamwork. Based on data, it is suggested complex communication form that makes possible encounter through recognition of the other and the otherness. Complex communication form, that support the tension agree-disagree, as a condition of negotiation understanding to coordinate actions. &nbsp

The repressive atmosphere and control exerted by the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera over the primary education inspectorate included the promulgation of the R.O. of 19 April 1928, which mandated the forced transferfrom their posts of seventeen of its members., These included the inspectors Leonor Serrano Pablo, Josefa Herrera Serra and Ángela Sempere Sanjuán, who were relocated as a form of punishment. In our search for the causes that led to these sanctions which remain unknown due to the lack of disciplinary procedures, we analyze their lives and professional trajectories. These suggest that the treatment given to these educators was conditioned by the gender variable, as they were linked to attitudes of disobedience to authorities’ orders, as well as to the manifestation of ideas considered dangerous, that is, related to women’s rights. Such attitudes were incompatible with the authoritarian principles of the regime and with its traditional view of women’s identity. Removed from their posts and uprooted from their cities of residence, the teachers were forced to resume their professional practices in an unfavourable environment, surviving their interior exile by combining an attitude of protest against their unjust situation with an intense professional activity tied to pedagogical innovation.

Radio-frequency performance comparison of several H-plane rectangular waveguide filters loaded with circular dielectric posts

This paper is a postprint of a paper submitted to and accepted for publication in IET Microwaves Antennas and Propagation and is subject to Institution of Engineering and Technology Copyright. The copy of record is available at IET Digital LibraryThe study presents a radio-frequency performance comparison between several H-plane geometry filters based on rectangular waveguide technology. The basic all-metal filter of resonant cavities is compared with filters loaded with circular dielectric resonators, either in propagative or evanescent mode. The use of these resonators is claimed to reduce the length of the filter, increase the rejection band until the first spurious frequency and to improve the voltage magnification factor (VMF), at the cost of increasing the losses. Therefore, in order to properly assess and quantify the possible advantages of these filters, an accurate analysis of six of them has been developed. All the filters have been designed to have the same electrical response, and the length, losses, rejection band, VMF, and fabrication cost for all the filters are compared. Our acknowledgement to the Val Space Consortium for its contribution - Laboratories co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund - A way of making Europe.Bachiller Martin, MC.; Esteban González, H.; Diaz, F.; Morro, JV.; Boria Esbert, VE.
